The ECB's Transmission Protection Instrument, created in 2022: a backstop, meaning a central bank's promise to buy a country's bonds if its market turns disorderly. The ECB can use it when such moves threaten how its policy reaches a country, but not for tensions it judges to reflect that country's fundamentals.
